True hero deserves a knighthood

To The Editor,

Dear Sir,

It was heartening to see Britain's last surviving Dambuster George 'Johnny' Johnson finally achieve recognition with an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Born near Horncastle, the 96-year-old was honoured by the recognition but I, like many, still feel this true hero deserves a knighthood.

More than 180,000 people signed a petition for Mr Johnson to receive a knighthood and although he humbly said the MBE is what he expected and it should be dedicated to those who lost their lives, I still hope the Queen gives him a higher accolade.

Quite apart from his wartime heroics, Mr Johnson has raised thousands of pounds for different charities over the years, including £5,000 for the International Bomber Command Centre, in Lincoln.

Yours faithfully,

Margot Parker, UKIP MEP for Lincolnshire
