In The Media & Newsletter » Margot Parker on the horrors of child marriage
UKIP's Women's and Equalities spokesperson Margot Parker has launched a push to raise awareness of the horrors of child marriages.
The UKIP East Midlands MEP was disgusted at recent reports and videos which showed a small girl kidnapped before her screaming mother's eyes in a small village in India.
The male kidnappers assault the mother as the little girl is hauled away in front of her crying brother.
Margot said: "The international community has to do more to stop this, it is sickening and has no place in a civilised world.
"Make no mistake - this is a crime, a disgusting crime. It threatens societies and it threatens and hinders integration.
"Figures show 250 million women worldwide are believed to have entered a marriage before the age of 15 - this is awful.
"It is shocking that 'forced' marriages only became a crime in the UK as recently as 2014. We now need to tackle this grotesque crime across the world, irrespective of race, religion or ethnic origin."
