MARGOT Parker MEP has backed a new report by MPs calling for all organisations with more than 50 employees to publish pay scales.
She said the fight for gender pay parity must continue as the report by the Business Committee claimed smaller firms often had wider pay gaps between men and women.
She said: "It is right and proper these discrepancies are resolved and although we now have legislation ensuring firms of more than 250 staff must publish average pay differences, the smaller firms must be made to adhere to that too.
"Transparency is the first step in this process and once the pay gaps are identified we must ensure companies put in p;ace robust plans to rectify discrepancies.
"Only recently, the European Economic and Social Committee welcomed the efforts made by the EU to address pay gaps between men and women. This is to be applauded too but knowing how slowly the EU machine cranks through the gears, I do not hold out huge hopes of the situation changing very quickly.
"Also, although the EU sees Europe as 'one state' and tends to adopt a 'one size fits all' criteria, there will be difficulties easing the gender pay gap problem.
"I will have more confidence this issue can be tackled in the UK, once we are out of the EU."
