The surge in knife attacks has shocked and appalled us all and it is time the Government took action to tackle the causes of this awful crime and hand out tougher sentences too.

For starters, the cuts in police numbers must play some part in the increase in these attacks and a root and branch probe should be undertaken as a matter of urgency.

I believe the overall approach to crime should be one of firmness, coupled with deterrent and rehabilitative strategies and a focus on combating crime which delivers clear social value outcomes.

And I also think the interests of law-abiding citizens and victims must always take precedence over those of criminals.

We should seek to introduce new personal weapons legislation on knife crime and combat the many different kinds of items now used to injure, disfigure or kill.

We must be tough on crime and start reversing the horrendous figures we see in our towns and cities.
