Margot Parker, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe
In The Media & Newsletter » Margot Parker MEP - The international community, including the UK and EU, must not rest until Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is freed
The latest developments in the case of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe are most disturbing.
Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe, jailed after being convicted of spying against Iran in 2016 - a charge she denies - is still languishing in prison.
Meanwhile, it appears the Ministry of Defence has said no to an appeal from the Foreign Office to hand over £400m owed by the UK to Iran from a 30-year-old British tank sale.
It is likely that if the money was paid, Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe would be released.
There is a real diplomatic conundrum here but the whole situation seems to strongly arouse suspicions around the whole 'trial' and reasons for her unjust imprisonment.
There comes a point when you have to stand up and be counted. The international community, including the UK and EU, must not rest until she is freed. We must continue to fight for an end to this brutal imprisonment and the abuse of human rights in Iran.
