"I read with interest in your newspaper that the Anti-FGM Board in Kenya is teaming up with various groups to ensure female genital mutilation is wiped out.

"The sectors involved include the government, the public and private sectors, civil society, the media and development partners. The board's CEO Bernarito Loloju is quoted as saying, "we want to work together toward a common vision to end the female cut."

This is a goal we all should be striving for across the entire globe. The practice is abhorrent and is abuse - plain and simple.

All countries and all societies should be making it clear that FGM is not acceptable under any circumstances and politically correct cultural sensitivities be damned.

I applaud the work of the Anti-FGM Board as it strives to wipe out this evil - the board says education is key and this is an important factor as we work towards the goal of ending the practice once and for all.

At home and across Europe, I have fought against FGM and have delivered speeches to the EU Parliament on the abhorrent practice.

Many of these crimes are committed before these women reach the UK but there are also instances where the procedure is undertaken in the UK itself and the only way to make it known this is not going to be tolerated is to bring prosecutions.

The physical and mental trauma this disgusting practice causes is heart-breaking for the victims.

This is entirely about keeping women in their place, asserting power over them and destroying their sexual identities.

One important factor as we fight to end is the annual International day for Zero Tolerance on Female Genital Mutilation, (FGM), which I support.

I backed the international day as it raised awareness of this crime. It wants and end to this practice by 2030.

Certainly, with work going on in your own country can help us strive towards that goal."
