In The Media & Newsletter » Margot Parker MEP - major victory for women's rights
To The Editor,
I was pleased to read that India's top court has ruled the practice of instant divorce in Islam unconstitutional.
This is a major victory for women's rights as India is one of a few countries in the world which allows a Muslim man to divorce his wife simply by saying 'talaq, (divorce), three times.
It was incredibly brave of the five Muslim women who filed the case to challenge this ridiculous and sexist law.
I regard this is as a major achievement for the rights of women in India - the 'triple talaq' rule is not even mentioned in Sharia Islamic law or the Koran.
