Margot Parker, Daphne Caruana Galizia, World Press Day
In The Media & Newsletter » Margot Parker MEP - journalists cannot be silenced, or we lose one of our cornerstones of democracy
I listened with interest to an interview by Matthew Caruana Galizia, the son of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was killed by a car bomb in October 2017.
As today is World Press Day, we should sit up and take notice that free speech is not a given - it should be protected and encouraged in local, national and international journalism.
I sincerely hope the Maltese authorities are successful in tracking down the killer of Daphne Caruana Galizia, who exposed many instances of misconduct by politicians in Malta.
No stone should be left unturned in the hunt - journalists cannot be silenced, or we lose one of our cornerstones of democracy. The interview with her son was heart-breaking - the hell and trauma he went through was truly horrendous.
Questions must be asked - we cannot allow 'forces', wherever they may be to shut down free speech and journalism.
We must live in a free society, with respect for human rights. Those working in the media and press are crucial to this - it is imperative we safeguard and protect an open society.
