MEP for the East Midlands Margot Parker has urged the authorities to look again at how to tackle the horror of female genital mutilation.
Her plea comes after a report showed the the mandatory reporting of FGM is "more symbolic than effective," according to Professor Andrew Rowland.
Mrs Parker, who has campaigned against the practice, said: "FGM must be stamped out - regardless of cultural differences. It is a horrifying practice full stop.
"This latest report starkly shows the scope of FGM in the UK is not being correctly investigated.
"There is a discrepancy between the data from the Health and Social Care Information Centre and subsequent police action, particularly as the police only become involved if the girl is under 18.
"The Government has to get a grip of this and link the recording, reporting and subsequent legal actions to stop this mutilation of women and girls."
