MARGOT Parker MEP has backed the forthcoming International Day of Families.
The special United Nations day will be held on Tuesday, May 15, and the theme this year is Families and Inclusive Societies.
The East Midlands MEP said that although families all over the world had changed over the past century, it was still a basic building block of society.
She said: "This special day gives people all over the globe the chance to not only celebrate the family unit but also to promote awareness of the changes families face in today's world."
"Across the UK and beyond the family unit faces many challenges. Some issues overlap, some are unique to different countries and cultures but this day gives us all the chance to take stock promote awareness of those challenges."
The International Day of Families provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting them.
It has inspired a series of awareness-raising events and activities include workshops and conferences, radio and television programmes, newspaper articles and cultural programmes highlighting relevant themes.
The EU will hold a special day and present a report on The Evolution of the Family, 2018.
