In The Media & Newsletter » Margot Parker MEP - Actions of Aung San show just how fragile our freedoms are
MARGOT Parker MEP has said the actions of Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi have starkly revealed how fragile the freedoms we take for granted really are.
The East Midlands MEP has recorded her thoughts on the regime of Burma's civilian leader, (see links), who has defended a court decision to imprison two Reuters reporters who were arrested while investigating alleged war crimes against Rohingya Muslims.
Mrs Parker said: "This is a new low for press freedom - these are false charges and the international community must do more to ensure their freedom.
"There was so much optimism after Aung San's release from house arrest and her road to subsequent power.
"She is now watching on as her military carries out genocide and erodes press freedom.
"To see how such a campaigner has fallen so dramatically is a stark reminder of how fragile the rights we take for granted really are.
"We can only hope she redeems herself and justifies the global support she achieved over the years.
"We must learn from this and ensure we never take our freedoms for granted."
