UKIP's Woman's and Equalities spokesperson Margot Parker MEP has said female genital mutilation is wrong in all places, among all people and for all time.
Her comments follow reports that leading so-called moderate Islamic scholar, Tariq Ramadam has called on the debate about Female Genital Mutilation to be only internal among Muslims, describing non Muslims who attack the practice as 'Islamaphobes'.
Mrs Parker said: "What absolute nonsense - this barbaric act of FGM should never be defended either within the Muslim community or outside it.
"This is not something internal within Islam, this is illegal in the UK and in the UK there must be one rule of law we are all governed by.
"FGM has been illegal in the UK for more than 30 years - including if girls are sent 'home' to be mutilated in the name of culture. Despite robust legislation existing to stop this abuse from occurring, there has not been a single conviction in all that time.
"There is no religious requirement for girls to undergo FGM, so even that flimsiest of excuses is absent.
"This is entirely about keeping women in their place, asserting power over them and destroying their sexual identities.
"The practice is barbaric and is something we should, as a society, make clear is not acceptable under any circumstances and politically correct cultural sensitivities be damned."
